National Research Infrastructure of the Republic of Bulgaria
Cell technologies in biomedicine (INFRAACT)
INFRAACT connects advanced cell models, multi-omics, imaging and phenotyping, bioinformatics and data expertise across Bulgarian research and clinical partners. We help teams turn scientific questions into robust experimental evidence and clearer pathways towards biomedical application.
INFRAACT is part of the National Roadmap for Research Infrastructures of the Republic of Bulgaria for 2020–2027. The infrastructure is coordinated by Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski and supported by the Ministry of Education and Science.
A connected infrastructure for biomedical translation
INFRAACT is a distributed national infrastructure that brings together complementary expertise from Sofia University, institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, genomic facilities and clinical or private partners. Researchers can approach the infrastructure with a translational question and be connected to the combination of models, analytical methods and data expertise their project requires.
Our purpose is not simply to provide access to individual instruments. We support integrated experimental workflows that connect biological questions, robust characterisation, reproducible data and the next step towards biomedical use.

Biomarkers in Translational Medicine
28 November 2025 · Grand Hotel Sofia
The academia-industry partnering symposium brought together scientists, clinicians, research infrastructures and companies to discuss biomarker development and biomedical translation.
Connected capabilities for translational research
INFRAACT combines complementary scientific platforms so that projects can move from an initial biological question to integrated experimental evidence. Each collaboration is shaped around the project’s purpose, required level of validation and next translational decision.
Advanced cell models
Human and animal cell systems, stem-cell approaches, 2D and 3D cultures, organoids and disease-relevant experimental models.
Multi-omics and molecular profiling
Genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and related approaches for deeper biological characterisation and biomarker discovery.
Imaging and phenotyping
Quantitative microscopy, cellular phenotyping and integrated analysis to connect molecular findings with cellular function.
Bioinformatics and data expertise
Reproducible data processing, interpretation, integration and support for FAIR and collaborative research workflows.
EATRIS BULGARIA
Bulgaria’s gateway to European translational medicine
EATRIS Bulgaria is the national node of EATRIS-ERIC and is embedded within INFRAACT. It connects Bulgarian researchers and innovators with European expertise, services, training, projects and partnerships across the translational pathway.
Through the node, teams can identify relevant scientific and technological expertise, strengthen project consortia, access education and regulatory resources, and connect national capabilities with cross-border opportunities.
Projects and digital resources
INFRAACT and EATRIS Bulgaria contribute to European initiatives that strengthen digital readiness, shared knowledge and cross-border collaboration in translational medicine.
EATRIS-CONNECT
Horizon Europe · 2024–2027 · 22 partners
EATRIS-CONNECT strengthens the digital readiness of EATRIS and supports widening participation through FAIR practices, shared knowledge, reference materials and interoperable approaches. Sofia University represents the Bulgarian node within the consortium.
HAPLO-iPS
COST Action CA21151 · 2022–2026
INFRAACT researchers contribute to HAPLO-iPS, a European network developing a framework for human induced pluripotent stem cell lines that are homozygous for frequent HLA haplotypes.
EATRIS Digital Hub
The EATRIS Digital Hub is an AI-supported knowledge discovery environment bringing together curated guidance, platform knowledge, FAIR data resources and self-service tools for translational research.
Coordinated nationally and connected internationally
INFRAACT is coordinated by Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski. Prof. Rossitza Konakchieva, INFRAACT Project Manager and National Director of EATRIS Bulgaria, provides scientific and organisational leadership across the infrastructure’s national and European activities.
The consortium brings together complementary expertise from universities, institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, genomic facilities and clinical or private partners.
